You may have recently heard that Facebook has announced that they are rebranding and changing their name to Meta. Well, their parent company.
Whilst this might just be Mark Zuckerberg’s mid-life crisis, you may be asking yourself and the question we are all wondering, and that’s… why?
Also, what exactly does this new name change mean for us digital marketers and Facebook Advertising, how will Facebook and Facebook advertising change, and what will its impact be?
Well, according to the main man himself, Facebook’s new company name Meta is a reference to the Greek term for “beyond”. Whilst Facebook, the social media platform name will remain the same. Meta refers to the company as a whole, and Zuckerberg’s new rebrand reflects and encompasses its range of services.
“I used to love studying classics, and the word meta comes from the Greek word meaning “beyond”. For me, it symbolises that there is always more to build, that there’s always a next chapter to the story,”– Mr Zuckerberg.
As we know, Zuckerberg is the creator of Facebook, however since the success of Facebook, his catalogue of social media platforms and companies has grown, and the rebranding is necessary to reflect the multiple services and platforms Facebook now own, including WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger.
“Over time, I hope that we are seen as a metaverse company, and I want to anchor our work and our identity on what we’re building towards.” – Mr Zuckerberg.
We know it sounds like something from an Avengers movie, but put simply, the Metaverse is the name for a shared online 3D virtual space in which companies are interested in creating a new futuristic artificial intelligence version of the internet.
“It will let you share immersive experiences with other people even when you can’t be together — and do things together you couldn’t do in the physical world.”-Mr Zuckerberg.
One of the examples given of what this Metaverse can do is as project holograms from your home to your office, and whilst this sounds exciting, the full scale of what the Metaverse will be and do is ambiguous as it’s not even created yet.
However, we know it will heavily focus on improving and incorporating AI systems and equipment more frequently into our everyday lives.
Well, for the time being, technically no. The full future of Meta is still unknown.
However, we know its aim is further to bridge the real world with our virtual world to create a greater sense of virtual presence. Whilst this all sounds intriguing. Unfortunately, we will have to wait a while as it won’t debut for another 10 to 15 years.
Until that time, we will see its full effect and understand its impact on digital marketers. But at The Good Marketer, our bet is hologram ads!
